Bamboo is not a tree but a fast growing grass. The species
used for flooring is sustainably harvested from selected
groves in southern China and is not eaten by pandas. It
takes only three to five years to grow bamboo, therefore
an acre of bamboo can provide more flooring than an acre
of trees. Cutting bamboo shoots does not destroy the roots
and fresh new sprouts grow in their place. Bamboo has
a dense root mass which helps prevent soil erosion and
provides a viable crop opportunity for hills where other
crops cannot grow.
