Determining the Requirements for a Cork Floor

How Much Cork

Measure the room and determine the square area. Add for closets, etc. and deduct any permanent built ins. For basic installs a minimum waste factor of 5% should be added to your order. Upon discussion with us, it may be determined that this needs to be greater.

Graph paper may be used for planning and layout. Using the graph lines to represent the actual sizes of floor tiles you can predetermine the best layout of a pattern for the room and determine exactly what you need for tiles.

What You Will Need
  • sharp utility knife
  • tape measure
  • Shur-line/Padco applicator for sealer, glue and urethane
  • chalk line
  • putty knife
  • carpenter's square
  • hand sander
The floor tiles need to be brought to room temperature, in their packaging, 24 to 48 hours before installation.

Installation Steps/Procedures
  • Complete subfloor preparation work before the cork flooring installation is scheduled to begin.
  • Make sure that site temperature and humidity can be maintained within acceptable limits during cork installation.
  • Open packages and preglue the tile backs with approved adhesive within 24 hours of the scheduled installation. Do not allow the glued faces to contact each other.
  • Prepare layout on the subfloor and determine and mark the starting line (usually central).
  • Apply approved adhesive to starting area of the subfloor and allow the adhesive to dry before laying cork floor tiles.
  • Install tiles at the start with the aid of a straight edge and continue gluing more subfloor as installation proceeds.
  • Trim cork floor tiles at walls as necessary and trim tiles to fit precisely at cabinets, fixtures, etc.
  • Sand the floor surfaces (light to moderate) with a palm type vibrating sander and vacuum thoroughly (this step does not apply to semi-finished or pre-coloured tile).
  • Apply the first coat of approved sealer (very thinly) with a pad type applicator (this step does not apply to semi-finished floor tile).
  • Apply a second thin coat of the approved sealer about 3 to 6 hours following the first coat (this step does not apply to semi-finished tile).
  • Apply a light to medium base coat of approved urethane 8 to 12 hours after the sealer and let floor rest for 2 days (this step does not apply to semi-finished tile).
  • Scuff sand the floor surface as necessary and clean up thoroughly.
  • Apply a medium coat of approved urethane and then within 4 to 7 hours apply a final coat of urethane
